Early signs from the counting of votes in Senegal’s presidential election are that incumbent Abdoulaye Wade faces a strong challenge from former premier Macky Sall.

An AllAfrica correspondent reports that after a turbulent election campaign - in which Wade is, controversially, standing for a third term - voters responded with maturity on Sunday, going to the polls with confidence and in large numbers.

As results began to be announced after polling stations closed, Sall cited unconfirmed counts showing he had won in the country’s largest regions, including Dakar, Rufisque, Tambacounda, Matam, Louga, Foundiougne, Matam and Boukounling, as well as in the diaspora.

Agence de Presse Sénégalaise reported Sall as saying overnight Sunday that a second round would be needed. “The figures in our possession indicate that a second round is inevitable,” he said. He called for “strict compliance” with the popular will.

A candidate needs a majority of all votes cast to be elected in the first round.

Wade was booed by voters in his home district as he went to vote on Sunday.

He was reported as telling the French newspaper, Journal du Dimanche, ahead of voting that his majority would be “so overwhelming” that he would be elected in the first round. Later Radio France Internationale quoted a presidential spokesman as saying it was far too early to tell whether a second round would be needed.

Wade was quoted as telling Journal du Dimanche that France and the United States had called on him to retire because “I am not docile … I am not a Negro service boy”.

Bitter Root: Two former Lord’s Resistance Army commanders seek traditional tribal justice in order to come to terms with their past.

Sunday Otto and Richard Odong were commanders in the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in northern Uganda. They were responsible for the commission of numerous brutalities against an unarmed civilian population.

Now back home in Gulu they have asked the Acholi tribal elders to implement Mato Oput, a traditional system of restorative justice involving perpetrators and victims, in order to be granted atonement for their actions and to enable them to start rebuilding their lives.

The Ugandan government has granted these men amnesty – now the community is being asked to do the same.

Zambia win the African Cup of Nations, honor those lost 19 years ago in plane crash
After taking off from Libreville in Gabon 19 years ago, a military plane carrying most of the squad crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. All 30 people on board, including 18 players, were killed. Before the crash, it was a golden era for Zambia’s football team. Their squad was expected to qualify for the 1994 World Cup, but of course things took a turn for the tragic.
19 years later, there are celebrations all over Zambia. And for good reason. Zambia, for the first time ever, are the Champions of Africa. Accepting the role of underdogs going into the final against the Ivory Coast, a team filled with world class talent like Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, and Gervinho, the Zambians, led by coach Herve Renard, played fearlessly. There were no goals in regulation, so penalty kicks decided who would would be crowned the best team in Africa. Against all odds, Zambia won 8-7 on penalties in what was one of the most dramatic shoot-outs in history. Throughout the shoot-out, the Zambian players and staff were singing, creating a surreal environment that transcended the events partaking on the pitch. The trophy doesn’t make up for what was lost 19 years ago, but tonight a feeling of vindication will fill the air throughout Zambia.

Senegal’s Wade shrugs off western pressure
Senegal’s President Abdoulaye Wade, whose reelection bid has drawn fierce criticism abroad, said in his opening campaign rally that France and the United States had no right to ask him to step aside.
“I do not seek the interest of the toubabs (Westerners), but that of the Senegalese people,” the 85-year-old leader said late Sunday in Mbacke, 200 kilometres (125 miles) east of the capital Dakar.
“The Americans and the French are not the Senegalese’s bosses. Nobody can deny our strength,” he said in a speech marking the official launch of the campaign for the February 26 presidential election.
The west African country’s opposition argues that Wade’s bid for a third term is unconstitutional, and has launched a protest movement aimed at forcing him to drop out of the race.
Former colonial power France and the United States, once fervent supporters of the veteran leader, have voiced their disappointment and suggested Senegal was ready for a next generation of leaders.

It pisses me off to no end that most presidents in Africa are nothing but power hungry puppets who are so thickheaded that they don’t realized they are being controlled by corporations and white people. Africa needs to do better man…
